If you are new to the Pokémon Trading Card Game, start with one sealed product from the current Mega Evolution era: a booster bundle if you just want to open packs, or an Elite Trainer Box if you want to open packs and learn to play. Pokémon cards are released in sets, each set is sold in a range of sealed formats, and knowing how those formats differ is most of what a beginner needs.

The simplest first buy is the Pokémon TCG Mega Evolution Booster Bundle (6 Packs), six packs from the set that opened the Mega Evolution era. It is live now in the Pokémon trading cards range at PUSHAS, where every box is sealed and authenticated by hand, alongside every other starter pick in this guide.

How Pokémon sets work

Pokémon TCG cards arrive in expansions, or sets, and sets are grouped into eras, sometimes called series or blocks. The current era is Mega Evolution. Its first set, simply called Mega Evolution, released in most regions on 26 September 2025 with more than 180 cards, and it brought back Mega Evolution Pokémon ex, powerful cards that give up three Prize cards when they are Knocked Out. Since then the era has added Phantasmal Flames (14 November 2025), the special set Ascended Heroes (from 30 January 2026), Perfect Order (27 March 2026), Chaos Rising (22 May 2026) and Pitch Black (17 July 2026), with Delta Reign announced for 6 November 2026.

For a beginner, the practical point is this: every sealed product belongs to one set, and the set name is always on the box. Starting with a single set keeps your first binder coherent and makes it easy to see which cards you still need. Our guide to every Mega Evolution set in order walks through each one and the Pokémon it features.

How packs and sealed products work

The booster pack is the basic unit. A Mega Evolution booster pack holds 10 cards, and almost every sealed product is some number of packs, with or without extras. The main formats, from smallest to largest:

  • Mini tin: two packs in a small collectible tin. The Ascended Heroes Mini Tin adds an art card and a sticker matching the tin's art.
  • Booster bundle: six packs and nothing else, in a compact box.
  • Elite Trainer Box: packs plus the accessories to play. A typical Mega Evolution-era Elite Trainer Box pairs its packs with card sleeves, Energy cards, dice, card dividers, a player's guide and a promo card.
  • Booster display (booster box): a sealed tray of packs from one set, with no accessories. The Phantasmal Flames Booster Display holds 36.
  • Ultra Premium Collection: a large display box built around foil promo cards and premium accessories.

We compare these side by side in ETB vs booster box vs booster bundle.

What to buy first

If you only want to open cards and start a binder, the booster bundle is the cleanest start: six packs, no accessories to set aside. If there is any chance you will play, go straight to an Elite Trainer Box. The Mega Evolution Elite Trainer Box comes in two versions, Mega Lucario and Mega Gardevoir, each with a full-art promo (Riolu or Alakazam), 65 card sleeves, Energy cards, a player's guide, damage-counter dice and a Pokémon TCG Live code card, in a box that doubles as storage for a deck.

Once you know you enjoy a set, a booster display is the way to open it in depth and fill a binder. The Mega Charizard X ex Ultra-Premium Collection is a different kind of buy: foil promos of Mega Charizard X ex and Oricorio ex, 18 booster packs, a playmat, a deck box, 65 sleeves, a metal coin and six damage-counter dice, with the sleeves, playmat, deck box and coin themed to Mega Charizard X. It suits a display shelf or a big gift more than a first opening.

Collecting and playing

You can collect without ever playing, but the basics help you understand the cards you pull. A deck is 60 cards made from three types: Pokémon, Trainer cards and Energy cards. Each player sets aside six Prize cards at the start and takes one each time they Knock Out an opposing Pokémon, more for powerful cards such as Pokémon ex. Taking all six is one of the ways to win. The sleeves, Energy and dice in an Elite Trainer Box cover everything you need to learn with a friend. For more on where to shop, see the best place to buy authentic Pokémon cards.
