BAPE is short for A Bathing Ape, the Japanese streetwear brand Nigo founded in 1993 in Ura-Harajuku, the backstreets of Tokyo's Harajuku district. The name comes from a Japanese saying about an ape bathing in lukewarm water, a wry nod to the comfortable, indulgent young people who bought it, and from the film Planet of the Apes. The APE HEAD logo, drawn by graphic designer Sk8thing, comes from the same film.
