The History of Nike Air Max

Nike designer Tinker Hatfield created the Air Max 1, released in 1987. On a visit to Paris he was struck by the Centre Pompidou, a building that shows its pipes and structure on the outside. He applied the same idea to the shoe, cutting away part of the midsole so buyers could see the Air unit inside for the first time.

The Air Max 90, first released as the Air Max III, followed in 1990 with a larger Air window. In 1995 Sergio Lozano designed the Air Max 95, drawing on human anatomy: the midsole stands for the spine, the eyelets for ribs and the layered side panels for muscle. It was the first running shoe with visible Air in the forefoot. The Air Max 97, designed by Christian Tresser, ran visible Air along the full length of the sole, and in 1998 Sean McDowell's Air Max Plus introduced Tuned Air.
